Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (WSACCO) concluded a two-day cooperative governance training. The training is aimed at improving the effectiveness of Board of Directors by equipping leaders with the skills needed to advance the SACCO’s performance and operational efficiency.
During the closing of the workshop, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, emphasized the importance of clearly defining the roles of the Board and management.
“I am always focused on ensuring that the roles of the Board of Directors and management are properly separated. Failing to address governance issues is often the root cause of conflicts between the two bodies. Even if you have the skills, knowledge, and loyalty, absence of a good working relationship between the governance and management will hinder the SACCO’s success,” he noted.
Brig Gen Joseph Freddy Onata, Chief Executive Officer of Wazalendo SACCO, noted that the timelines of the training in respect of getting the BOD to monitor and evaluate the performance of recently reviewed strategic plan for 2025–2026.
”This training has come at an ideal time. It allows us to evaluate our governance practices and adapt to the ever-changing environment in which we operate. These periodic sessions help us refocus and ensure we remain on track to achieve our objectives,” Brig Gen Onata stated.
Ms Judith Asheylynne Mubiru, representing Jaans Solutions, pointed out the role of co-operative governance in promoting transparency, building trust, and creating value for members.
The training addressed a wide range of topics, including governance frameworks in cooperatives, governance risk and compliance management, member engagement and retention, and legal and regulatory frameworks.
In attendance were: the Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Col Justus Rukundo; the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, Col Allan Kitanda; as well as other members of the Board of Directors and Supervisory Board.
