ENGINEERS BRIGADE ARE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS AS AIR FORCE WINS NETBALL AT THE CDF’S CUP

The 15th Edition of the Chief of Defence Forces Cup tournament ended at Kakyeka Stadium, Mbarara City. The two-week event attracted 19 football teams and 12 netball teams drawn from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces Formations and Units.
The breath-taking final match between the Air Force and Engineers Brigade ended 1 all in the 90 minutes and was decided by a penalty shootout which Engineers wom 4 : 1. Air Force were winners in netball beating UPDF Headquarters by 40:35.
The Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu who presided at the closure of the tournament thanked the Formation Commanders for their contribution towards the success of the tournament. He noted that such sporting activities build a spirit of comradeship and gives an opportunity to the service personnel to visit other parts of their country they may never have known.
He congratulated the participants for the sporting spirit demonstrated and assured them of the CDF’s commitment towards supporting sports in the UPDF.
Brig Gen Paul Muhanguzi the Acting 2 Infantry Division Commander commended 2 Infantry Division for successfully hosting the tournament. “I have no doubt the objectives of the CDF cup were achieved.” He observed.
He thanked the Chieftaincy of Education, Sports and Culture for organizing and directing the event. He also appreciated Ntare School and Mbarara High School for providing their playing fields for practice by the teams. The Division Commander also commended the generosity of Mabrara City and Mbarara Primary schools which provided accommodation for the teams.
The Acting Chief of Education, Sports and Culture Col Deus Taremwa noted that the tournament demonstrated UPDF’s ability not only in shooting the gun but also in identifying and developing talent.” He. appreciated the partners who sponsored the games including the tournament’s main sponsors the Wazalendo SACCO who dressed all the teams and provided other sports gear.
He invited the UPDF clubs to scout for talent from the participating teams. He also announced a plan to increase the sporting disciplines to include boxing, volleyball, basketball and marathon.
Lt Col Buha Magero, the Director Finance and Administration Wazalendo SACCO and acting MD Wazalendo Investments SMC Ltd, who represented the WSACCO’s Chief Executive Officer Col Joseph Freddy Onata said that WAZALENDO as the main sponsors of the tournament shall continue to sponsor sports activities of the UPDF for better performance of the teams. He added that supporting sports, education, environmental protection and training of other SACCOs are some of the strategic areas through which Wazalendo SACCO gives back to the members and the community under the corporate responsibility function.
Lt Col Buha Magero encouraged the members to embrace services offered by Wazalendo SACCO if they are to improve their welfare. He informed them that WSACCO has acquired two pieces of land in Mabanga
Matugga and at Bulamu on Mityana road which have been demarcated into affordable plots to enable members of the SACCO and community to acquire genuine plots of land and develop themselves so as to contribute to the country’s development agenda.
The participating teams were drawn from the Special Forces Command, Armoured Brigade, Motorized Infantry, CMI, Magamaga, Field Artillery Division, Jinja Cantonment, Military Police. The 01, 02, 03 and 04 Divisions were among the participating teams.
