The Joint Staff Political Commissariat of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Maj Gen Henry Masiko, has underscored the critical role that political education plays in maintaining the work spirit of the UPDF.
He explained that ideology serves as the backbone of the army and is crucial in ensuring that the personnel understand the purpose of their service.
“Ideological grounding is important in ensuring that the force and personnel understand the mission of the army so that they serve out of conviction” Maj Gen Masiko said.
He emphasised the importance of soldiers having a sense of purpose and mission as these enable them to make individual sacrifices and do their work out of conviction. He noted that military service is not about careerism but rather about conscious discipline and sacrifice.
In his welcome remarks , Brig Gen Joseph Freddy Onata, the Chief Executive Officer of WSACCO, highlighted that the retreat was organized to help staff understand the link between Wazalendo SACCO’s mandate and the historical mission of the UPDF.
“When people work with an understanding of why they do what they do, they become more productive. Ideological understanding will therefore help us connect our work to the efforts of the soldiers in the field who are the biggest contributors of the resources that we employ to serve and to do business” Brig Gen Onata explained.
The topics covered on day one of retreat included positive attitudes for effective performance, delivered by Col. Anatoli Nuwagira, and work balance and self-care, presented by Ms. Patience Rwendaire.
